The campus as a living lab

The Cooperative Research Centre for Water Sensitive Cities (CRCWSC) was established in July 2012. Under the CRCWSC banner, The University of Queensland and Queensland Urban Utilities developed a concept to create a living laboratory on the St Lucia campus as part of the new campus masterplan.

Waste as an asset

JDA Co. proposed a vision that incorporated teaching, learning and research around the issues of water, waste and energy management, using the campus as a living laboratory. The concept is for a state of the art, user-centred and open-innovation ecosystem.
The project makes visible previously hidden infrastructure and decentralised facilities, locating them in ‘re-use hubspots’ across the campus.
Students and researchers can lab-test new technologies such as electro dialysis, U Gold, struvite and micro-biological products. The project also monitors medical research into the health and wellbeing of the campus community.
